The Role:

We are looking for an experienced National Transport Manager, based in Birmingham looking after a fleet of circa 250 vehicles, from company cars up to 26t Hiab vehicles. Working for a leading specialist plant and equipment hire company, you will have experience of providing strategic and operational leadership of a commercial fleet, qualified to National / International CPC, and be a FORS practitioner. Managing  a team of 2 direct reports (assistant transport manager and transport administrator), covering multiple locations across the UK. 


Key Responsibilities:

As Group Transport Manager - Plant Hire, your duties will include:

  • Manage and report transport KPI's to director level, attending management meetings
  • Ensure vehicles purchased / leased as per company policy
  • Ensure vehicles are maintained to manufacturers recommendations
  • Comply with O licence requirements, ensuring transport audits are carried out and acted on
  • Monitor costs including 3rd party and hired in transport
  • Continually review policies and procedures, ensuring best practise / legal requirements
  • Implement FORS standards and ensure accreditation is maintained across the depots
  • Complete accident investigations and appropriate action taken, including action on issues highlighted
  • 2 x Direct reports, an assistant and administrator 


  • Provide advice and guidance to managers and operators on fleet issues
  • Processing invoices and resolving any queries
  • Provide detailed reports and make recommendations to support strategic business decisions
  • Update fleet management software and vehicle tracking systems
  • Process PCN's and fines
  • Conduct periodic reviews highlighting any training and development requirements


Skills & Requirements:

The ideal candidate for the National Transport Manager role will have:

  • Demonstrate substantial experience of working as a fleet / transport manager
  • Understand transport compliance law including VOSA / DVSA
  • National / International CPC qualified
  • FORS practitioner
  • Able to develop policies within a practical framework
  • Proactive, self-motivated, able to prioritise and remain calm under pressure
